Lake Salagou is an artificial lake fed by the Salagou River. The lake’s 750 hectares stretch across the towns of Clermont l’Hérault, Liausson, Octon, Salasc, Celles and Le Puech.
It covers 6.5km from Octon to the dam with an average depth of 15m (55m at its deepest). Downstream from the dam, the Salagou rejoins the Lergue which runs through Hérault. Lake Salagou was designed to store water for irrigation and combat the rise in water levels in the Hérault. It is now also used for a range of activities: tourism and leisure activities, hydroelectric production, fire fighting, not to mention its ecological and scenic role.
